Emotion AI: Weird, Wild, and Kind of Wonderful

The other day, I was venting to a friend about how my phone always seems to know when I’m stressed. Like, actually knows. The suggested music changes. My smartwatch buzzes with a reminder to breathe. It’s creepy and comforting at the same time. That’s when he brought up something I hadn’t really thought about in depth before—Emotion AI.

And just like that, I fell down a rabbit hole.

Not Just Another Tech Buzzword

This isn’t your usual “AI can write emails and draw cats” kind of stuff. Emotion AI is more about reading people—how they feel, what they might be thinking, even how their mood is shifting. It’s being used in apps, customer support, education, mental health tools… everywhere.

At first, I brushed it off. But then I started noticing it. The airline chatbot that “knew” I was annoyed and gave me a quick option to talk to a human. The e-learning video that paused and checked in when I got stuck. These little moments add up.

The Numbers Are Wild

While I was doing some late-night reading (as one does), I came across a report from Roots Analysis. They broke it down in a way that really made me sit back for a second. The emotion AI market is projected to grow from USD 5.73 billion in 2025 to about USD 38.5 billion by 2035. That’s a CAGR of 20.99%. That’s not a small bump. That’s huge.

And it made sense. We're emotional creatures. It was only a matter of time before machines started picking up on that—especially when we feed them with our faces, voices, typing patterns, and emojis all day.

It’s Not Just for Tech Bros

One area that actually got me thinking deeper was mental health. Some startups are building tools that listen to how you talk—your tone, speed, rhythm—and can flag early signs of depression or anxiety. I mean, it's not perfect, but imagine catching a mental health spiral before it gets serious? That’s the kind of thing that actually helps people. Quietly, in the background.

But Also... It’s a Bit Much Sometimes

There’s definitely a line. And we’re kind of inching close to it.

When a tool helps you, it’s great. But when it watches you too closely without asking, it’s invasive. It’s like, okay—do I really want a machine trying to guess how I feel during a work call? What if I’m just tired and not grumpy?

The balance between helpful and intrusive is super thin.

Final Thoughts

I think I’m still figuring out how I feel about Emotion AI. Part of me is excited—like, this could lead to better tech experiences, more empathy, maybe even more emotional awareness in a world that desperately needs it. But the other part? A little uneasy. Because when your emotions become data, you’ve got to ask: who’s watching, and why?

Either way, this tech isn’t going away. And if it’s going to read us, we better start reading it too.
