QuickBooks users may experience Error PS038 when trying to update payroll, and it typically points to unresolved paychecks still marked as “Online to Send.” These transactions haven’t been cleared from the system, causing QuickBooks to fail each time it attempts to complete a payroll update.


To troubleshoot:


Open the paycheck list (Reports > Employee & Payroll > Transaction List by Payroll Item).


Apply filters to show only checks marked “Online to Send.”


Review the status of each and resend or recreate them if needed.


Use the QuickBooks Verify and Rebuild Data tools to resolve any internal data errors.
