The internet is broken. Filter bubbles, myth traps, and Facebook scandals reign supreme. What began so beautifully as a decentralized and democratic system is now controlled by a handful of large tech companies. We have become the product ourselves. We share our data en masse with these companies, with all the negative consequences that entails. In my view, the internet is the most important technological revolution humanity has ever witnessed and will increasingly impact our daily lives in the coming years. But how can it become ours again? Web3 is the next evolution of the internet, one that addresses the many problems currently plaguing it.
Data is being used against us Today's web has become different from what its inventors envisioned, according to Tim Berners Lee, founder of the World Wide Web . The goal of enabling people to find information and connect with each other has certainly been achieved, but that same ability has also created major problems. Combined with digital authoritarianism, data and information are now being used against us as citizens. By shaping our opinions, through algorithms that identify innocent people as perpetrators and even incite them to suicide. As Marleen Stikker writes in her book "The Internet Is Broken – But We Can Fix It ": "We have lost our digital sovereignty. We are being monitored, controlled, tracked, and controlled, and we have allowed it to happen."
Data vacuum cleaner.
The giant tech companies Google, Facebook, and Amazon offer incredible services that represent immense value to billions of people around the world. Google's search engine simply works best when it has all the information. But on the other hand, they have acquired a terrifying power over our daily lives.
The World Health Organization warns of an infodemic . And the authoritative Edelmann publication, which annually surveys trust in various areas, indicates that public trust in technology has never been so dramatically low (pdf).
