Genshin Impact, the sprawling open-world RPG by HoYoverse, is as famous for its breathtaking landscapes and deep lore as it is for its gacha system. Pulling for that new 5-star character or signature weapon can feel like walking a tightrope suspended over a chasm of disappointment. However, woven into the fabric of this system is a lifeline: the Pity Counter. Understanding the mechanics, especially the elusive "Soft Pity," is the difference between celebrating a big win and despairing over lost Primogems.
This comprehensive Genshin Guide will demystify the Pity system, focusing intensely on the crucial concept of Soft Pity, ensuring you maximize your pulls and finally get that character you’ve been dreaming of.
What is Pity in Genshin Impact?
At its core, the Pity system is a built-in guarantee mechanism designed to ensure players eventually receive high-rarity items (5-stars) within a specific number of wishes. It removes the truly abysmal luck scenarios where you might spend thousands of pulls without seeing a single 5-star.
There are two main types of Pity you need to know about: Hard Pity and Soft Pity.
Hard Pity: The Absolute Guarantee
Hard Pity is straightforward. It is the maximum number of wishes you will ever have to make on a specific banner type before guaranteeing a 5-star result.
Standard Banner & Character Event Banners: Hard Pity is set at 90 wishes. If you haven't pulled a 5-star by the 89th pull, the 90th is guaranteed to be one. Weapon Event Banners (Epitomized Path): Hard Pity is set at 80 wishes.
The 50/50 Mechanic
Before we dive into Soft Pity, we must address the 50/50. When you hit Hard Pity on a Character Event Banner, you have a 50% chance of receiving the featured 5-star character and a 50% chance of receiving a standard 5-star character (like Jean, Diluc, Mona, etc.).
If you win the 50/50, the next 5-star you pull (at the next Hard Pity trigger) is guaranteed to be the featured banner character. If you lose the 50/50 (you get a standard 5-star), your next 5-star pull is guaranteed to be the featured character—this is known as a Guaranteed Pull.
The Concept of Soft Pity: Your Hidden Advantage
If Hard Pity is the absolute ceiling, Soft Pity is the ceiling’s often-unmentioned, highly rewarding preamble. Soft Pity is a hidden, statistical shift in your drop rates that makes pulling a 5-star significantly more likely as you approach Hard Pity.
Crucially, Soft Pity is not an official, declared number by HoYoverse, but rather an observed pattern derived from extensive player data collection.
When Does Soft Pity Kick In?
While the exact moment is slightly debated and might vary by banner type, the consensus among the Genshin community is that Soft Pity begins around the 74th or 75th wish on Character Event Banners and the Standard Banner.
For simplicity and safety, most experienced players treat the Soft Pity threshold as Wish 75.
How Does Soft Pity Work?
From wish 1 to wish 74 (or 75), the chance of pulling a 5-star remains at the base rate (0.6% for the first pull, increasing slightly thereafter).
Once you enter the Soft Pity window (around wish 75):
1. The Drop Rate Increases Dramatically: The probability of pulling a 5-star spikes significantly with every subsequent pull. 2. Guaranteed Success Imminent: While you are not guaranteed a 5-star until wish 90, the chances of getting one between wishes 75 and 89 become astronomically high—often approaching 90-100% chance by the 85th pull if you haven't hit it already.
Think of it like this: If you are on pull 74 and haven't gotten a 5-star, you still have the standard low chance. But on pull 75, the game essentially starts counting wishes toward your guaranteed 90 pull much more aggressively, giving you fantastic odds to end your dry spell early.
Why Understanding Soft Pity is Essential for Your Genshin Guide Strategy
Knowing about Soft Pity fundamentally changes how you approach wishing, especially if you are low on Primogems or trying to save for a specific character.
1. Saving Primogems Wisely
If you have 60 wishes saved and the banner you want is coming soon, you might feel safe, knowing you have a buffer before Hard Pity (90). However, if you already have 50 wishes on the current banner (meaning your current Soft Pity window is approaching), those 60 saved wishes suddenly feel much riskier.
By tracking your current pull count, you can better judge the risk:
If you are under 70 wishes: You have room to pull a few times without immediate fear of needing a full 90-pull commitment. If you are over 75 wishes: You are now in the danger zone. Every pull should be treated as a potential 5-star, and you should ideally stop pulling unless you are prepared to commit to the full Hard Pity, especially if you lost the 50/50 previously.
2. Maximizing Character Acquisitions
If you are pulling for a character and lose the 50/50 (getting a standard 5-star), you know your next 5-star is guaranteed. If you are currently at 40 pulls, you know you have roughly 50 more pulls (40 + 50 = 90) before the guarantee.
However, if you are at 76 pulls when you hit that losing 50/50, you only need about 14 more pulls to hit Soft Pity territory, and maybe 20-30 pulls before the guaranteed character lands. This informs your decision to spend some budget now or wait for the next banner.
How to Track Your Pity Accurately
The biggest challenge with Soft Pity is that HoYoverse does not display the current Pity count directly on the wish screen. This makes tracking crucial.
1. The Wish History Screen is Your Best Friend
The Wish History screen is the only official tool you have.
Accessing History: Go to the Wish screen, click "History" (usually in the bottom left). Counting: Scroll to the very top of your history for the specific banner (Event, Standard, or Weapon). The very first entry is your first pull on that banner. Count backward from the most recent pull. Finding the Last 5-Star: Locate the last 5-star drop. If the pull before that 5-star was wish 89, you hit Hard Pity. If it was wish 77, your Soft Pity kicked in at 75, and you hit the 5-star on your 77th pull.
2. External Tracking Tools (Recommended)
Because manual counting is tedious and prone to error, relying on third-party tools is highly recommended for serious players managing their resources.
Many websites and spreadsheet templates exist that allow you to input your banner history data. These tools instantly calculate your current Pity count, whether you are on a 50/50 guarantee, and estimate how many wishes you need to guarantee your target. Search for "Genshin Pity Tracker" online; many excellent, community-developed options are available.
Soft Pity on Weapon Banners (Epitomized Path)
The Weapon Event Banner (Epitomized Path) operates slightly differently due to the Epitomized Path system, but Soft Pity still applies.
Weapon Banner Pity Structure:
Hard Pity: 80 wishes for a 5-star weapon. 50/50 Equivalent: You have a 75% chance of getting one of the two featured weapons if you have set an Epitomized Path, or a 37.5% chance for each featured weapon if you haven't charted a path yet. Soft Pity: Similar to character banners, the drop rate significantly increases around the 65th to 70th wish.
Because the Hard Pity is lower (80), the Soft Pity window starts a bit earlier. If you are sitting at 68 pulls without a 5-star weapon, you should exercise extreme caution, as your next pull has a very high likelihood of yielding a weapon, and you don't want to overspend if you only needed a few more pulls for the guarantee.
