How to change the ringtone on an iPhone

Here are the most effective methods for changing and customizing your ringtones on iOS.

1. Standard Settings from Settings
If you want to choose one of the sounds that come with the system or one you've previously purchased, follow these steps:

Step 1: Open the Settings app on your iPhone.

Step 2: Select Sounds & Haptics.

Step 3: Tap on Ringtone.

Step 4: Here you'll see a list of all available ringtones. Simply tap on one to hear it and select it.

Note: At the top of this menu, you can also access the Ringtone Store if you want to officially purchase sounds from current movies or songs.

2. How to Use Any Song as a Ringtone
In 2026, the most popular and free way to set your own song as a ringtone is still through the GarageBand app (available for free on the App Store).

Download the audio: Save the desired song to the Files app on your iPhone.

Import to GarageBand: Open GarageBand, select Audio Recorder, and tap the Tracks icon (the bricks). Then, use the Loop icon to import your audio file.

Trim the audio: Adjust the song to a maximum of 30 seconds, which is the standard for ringtones on iOS.

Export: Go to My Songs, tap and hold your project, and select Share > Ringtone. Give it a name and tap Export.

Finish: The system will ask if you want to use it as your new default ringtone immediately.
