3:22 AM 		Whale are among the most extraordinary creatures in the ocean, known for their massive size and deep-diving abilities. One of the most interesting questions people ask is how long can whales hold their breath. The answer varies depending on the species, but whales have developed incredible adaptations that allow them to stay underwater far longer than most animals.
Whales are mammals, which means they need to breathe air just like humans. However, unlike humans, they have evolved to efficiently use oxygen while diving. On average, many whale species can hold their breath for about 20 to 60 minutes. Some species, like the sperm whale, can remain underwater for even longer periods.
When exploring how long can whales hold their breath, it is important to understand that different whales have different capabilities. For example, blue whales typically stay submerged for around 10 to 20 minutes, while humpback whales can dive for about 30 minutes. The sperm whale, however, is known to hold its breath for up to 90 minutes in extreme cases.
Whales achieve this remarkable ability through several biological adaptations. They have larger lungs relative to their body size and can exchange up to 90% of the air in their lungs with each breath, compared to about 10–15% in humans.
