The Toyota Camry has long been celebrated as one of the world's most dependable sedans. Its reputation for low running costs and long-term reliability has made it the best-selling car in the United States for more years than most competitors would care to count. But no vehicle regardless of its pedigree is entirely free from engine issues, and the Camry has a handful that, if ignored, can turn a modest repair into a significant financial event.
The most widely discussed engine problem across toyota Camry engine generations is excessive oil consumption particularly in the 4-cylinder 2.4L 2AZ-FE engine used in 2002–2011 models. Toyota itself acknowledged this issue and extended warranty coverage in several markets after numerous owner complaints. The root cause lies in piston ring design that allowed oil to pass into the combustion chamber, burning away quietly without triggering warning lights until it became severe. Left unchecked, oil starvation can cause bearing damage, accelerated wear, and ultimately engine seizure — a repair bill easily exceeding $4,000 to $7,000. Moving into later generations, the 2.5L 2AR-FE and the 3.5L 2GR-FE V6 are generally more robust, but they're not without concerns. The V6 models, while powerful and smooth, have been associated with carbon buildup on intake valves due to direct injection technology. Carbon deposits restrict airflow over time, reducing efficiency and causing rough idling or misfires. An intake valve cleaning service, while not catastrophically expensive, adds to your long-term running costs if neglected for too long.
The Camry's variable valve timing system (VVT-i) is another area worth monitoring. The VVT-i oil control valve sometimes called the oil control solenoid relies entirely on clean, high-quality oil to operate correctly. When servicing lapses, sludge can clog the solenoid, causing rough engine behaviour and fault codes. Replacement parts are affordable, but if the issue is traced back to widespread sludge contamination in the oil galleries, the cleaning process becomes far more involved and expensive. Hybrid Camry owners have additional considerations. The 2.5L Atkinson-cycle engine in hybrid models runs cooler and under different thermal cycles than a conventional petrol engine — meaning coolant system health is even more critical. Coolant degradation in hybrid variants has been linked to water pump premature wear and, in some cases, head gasket stress over extended high-mileage use.
The takeaway? The Camry's engine issues are rarely sudden catastrophes — they're slow-developing problems rooted in maintenance neglect. Regular oil changes, coolant system checks, and periodic inspections are the most effective insurance policy you can hold. Catch these problems in their early stages and the Camry continues to earn its legendary reputation. Ignore them, and you'll find out exactly why a $30 oil change matters more than you thought
