Swing bowling in cricket is a very effective technique used to confuse the batsman. The basic principle of this technique is the difference in the condition of the two sides of the ball. If one side is kept smooth and shiny and the other side is naturally rough, then the speed of the ball in the air changes. This change is what creates swing. Ball polishing is usually done by fielders on the field. They regularly rub a specific side of the ball during the match to keep it shiny. They usually use a clean part of their clothes to do this. Sometimes they can also use the sweat on their hands if it is allowed by the rules. Through this process, one side of the ball becomes smoother than the other side.
In swing bowling, the behavior of new balls and old balls is different. New balls usually swing more because their surface is still relatively hard and shiny. However, as the match progresses, one side of the ball wears down quickly. The properly polished side then allows the bowler to reverse swing. At this stage, the ball behaves completely differently and becomes more difficult for the batsmen.
Consistency is very important in polishing the ball. If a fielder accidentally rubs the rough part of the ball, the balance of swing bowling can be lost. Therefore, there must be coordination within the team. Bowlers usually instruct the fielders which side to keep shiny and which side to let wear down naturally.
The rules for polishing the ball in international cricket are very strict. The use of any kind of artificial substance is completely prohibited. There have been some incidents in the past where players have tried to illegally change the condition of the ball. Such actions destroy the fairness of the game and are considered a punishable offence. Therefore, in modern cricket, umpires regularly check the ball.
Swing bowling does not depend solely on the skill of the bowler. It is the result of the collective effort of the team. It is important for the fielders to polish the ball properly, understand the bowler's plan and act according to the situation. A good team puts the opposition under pressure by combining these factors.
It is very important for new players to understand the importance of ball polishing. Many times they neglect it considering it a small task. But in high-level cricket, this small task can make a big difference. Properly polishing the ball can significantly improve a bowler's performance.
