een sourcing gemstones directly from Ethiopia for a few years now, and Welo opal still manages to surprise me every single time I open a parcel of rough.
What gets me is how different two stones can look depending on the light. Under direct sun you might get a calm, almost clear stone, then tilt it slightly and it throws out flashes of green, orange, even violet out of nowhere. It's not a treatment or a trick — it's literally how the silica structure inside the stone bends light. No two pieces ever come out the same, even from the same parcel.
A few things I've learned along the way that might help anyone here who's curious about buying or working with opal:
- Ethiopian opal is "hydrophane," meaning it can absorb water and look cloudy for a bit before clearing back up. Totally normal, just something to know before you panic.
- The pattern matters more than size for value — a small stone with a full "harlequin" flash pattern can be worth more than a bigger one with a single dull flicker.
- If you're buying cabochons for jewelry, always ask if it's natural vs. a doublet/triplet (real opal glued to a backing). Not a bad thing, just needs to be priced and disclosed honestly.
