Large employers frequently fund medical and prescription (Rx) plans, which deliver cost advantages but also expose organizations to financial risk. Because of this, oversight is essential. Annual medical claim and PBM auditing services are a critical part of this process. Today, most claims are processed by third-party administrators (TPAs) and pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs), making it vital for plan sponsors to verify their accuracy. While contracts may require self-reviews, it is prudent to supplement these with independent audits performed by outside experts, who represent only the plan’s interests.

Given the complexity of benefit plans, even a minor error in a TPA or PBM’s processes may result in significant financial consequences. When choosing an audit partner, seek out firms with deep industry experience, especially those whose executives have backgrounds in health plan management. These professionals are qualified to identify both obvious and subtle errors, drawing on their understanding of claim processing. Their knowledge uncovers common mistakes and helps reduce costs and increase overall plan performance. The right knowledge and experience can make a measurable difference.

Firms led by executives with medical plan backgrounds frequently utilize the most advanced audit software, raising the standards. This technology improves both the accuracy and productivity of audits. For in-house teams at plan sponsors, partnering with such firms is convenient, as the procedure usually demands minimal staff time. After an initial audit, many organizations opt for ongoing monitoring, which uses audit software to deliver real-time reports and trend evaluations. This continuous oversight enables the best-managed plans to keep a closer watch on costs and sustain optimal performance.

Auditing is especially critical when a plan changes its TPA or PBM vendor. Conducting an independent implementation audit approximately 90 days after a new contract begins is highly recommended. This early review helps identify and correct any setup errors or inconsistencies before they worsen. Taking this assertive approach also signals to TPAs and PBMs that the plan sponsor is committed to diligent oversight and expects performance guarantees to be met. Backing up discussions with accurate, factual data strengthens the sponsor’s position and guarantees accountability from all parties involved.
