The Coaching Carousel is the annual offseason event in CFB 27 Dynasty Coaching (https://cfb27.com/) where head coaching and coordinator positions become available across the country. For ambitious coaches, the carousel is the path to bigger programs, higher salaries, and better recruiting resources. For program builders, it is the moment your success gets recognized. Here is how the carousel works and how to master it.

## How the Carousel Works

The carousel triggers after the national championship game. The game simulates coach firings, retirements, and promotions across all 134 FBS programs. On average, 15-25 head coaching jobs open each offseason, with coordinator positions being even more volatile.

### Why Jobs Open
- **Firings**: Programs that underperform their expectations fire their coach. A 10-win season at Alabama triggers a firing; a 6-win season at Vanderbilt earns an extension. Context matters.
- **Retirements**: Coaches over age 60 have an increasing probability of retirement. Legendary coaches sometimes trigger succession storylines.
- **Promotions**: Successful coordinators get hired as head coaches at smaller programs. This creates a cascade effect as those coordinator jobs then open.
- **NFL Poaching**: Championship-winning head coaches occasionally receive NFL offers that they may accept. This is rare but creates the most desirable openings.

### Your Carousel Options
When the carousel begins, you will receive offers based on your performance at your current job. You can:
1. Stay at your current program with an extension (raise and increased job security)
2. Accept a head coaching offer at a new program
3. Accept a coordinator offer at a larger program (unusual but sometimes strategic)
4. Decline all offers and enter the open market with no job—risky but occasionally pays off

## What Determines Your Offers

The offers you receive are determined by a formula weighting several factors:

### Win-Loss Record (40 percent weight)
Your recent performance is the single biggest factor. The game looks primarily at your last two seasons, with emphasis on:
- Overall record
- Conference record
- Bowl game results
- Performance against ranked opponents

A 9-4 season with a bowl win over a ranked opponent carries more weight than a 10-3 season against a weak schedule.

### Program Prestige Growth (25 percent weight)
Did you make your current program better? The game compares your program prestige rating when you arrived versus where it is now. Taking a 2-star program to 3.5 stars in three seasons is more impressive than maintaining a 4-star program at the same level.

### Player Development (15 percent weight)
How many of your players got drafted? How many won awards? Developing NFL talent is a concrete signal that bigger programs value. Even if your win-loss record is modest, sending multiple players to the league each year will generate interest.

### Recruiting Performance (10 percent weight)
Your recruiting class rankings matter. Consistently landing top-25 classes at a mid-tier program demonstrates that you can compete for talent at any level.

### Coach Prestige and Badges (10 percent weight)
Your personal coaching attributes affect your marketability. Coaches with the “Program Builder” or “Quarterback Whisperer” badges are more attractive to programs seeking those specific skills.

## Positioning for Your Dream Job

If you have a specific program you want to coach, here is how to position yourself:

### Target the Pipeline
Programs tend to hire from within their coaching tree. If you want the Ohio State job, spend time as a coordinator or head coach at a Big Ten program. If you want the Texas job, build your resume in the Big 12. Conference familiarity matters.

### Check the Incumbent Status
Before you invest years positioning for a specific job, check the current coach age and contract status. A 45-year-old coach on a long-term extension is not going anywhere. A 62-year-old on an expiring contract is a ticking clock.

### Build the Right Resume
Different programs prioritize different things:
- Blue bloods (Alabama, Ohio State, Georgia): National championships and top-five recruiting classes
- Sleeping giants (Nebraska, Miami, Tennessee): Program turnaround stories and excitement
- Academic powers (Stanford, Northwestern, Duke): Graduation rates and clean programs
- Developmental programs (Iowa, Wisconsin, Utah): Player development and NFL draft picks

## Coordinator Career Path

You can play the entire carousel as a coordinator, building your resume at increasingly prestigious programs until the right head coaching offer comes. The coordinator path typically looks like:
1. Start as an offensive or defensive coordinator at a Group of Five program
2. Move to a Power Five coordinator role after 2-3 successful seasons
3. Become head coach at a Group of Five program
4. Leverage G5 head coaching success into a Power Five head coaching job

## Negotiating Your Contract

When you receive an offer, you enter contract negotiations. Key leverage points:
- **Salary**: Affects your coach prestige growth rate
- **Contract Length**: Longer contracts provide job security
- **Buyout**: Lower buyouts make it easier for you to leave for a better job
- **Facility Commitments**: Requesting facility upgrades as part of your contract accelerates program growth
- **Staff Budget**: A larger coordinator salary pool lets you hire better assistants
