Curly hair is one of the most interesting hair types to create in 3D because its appearance depends heavily on curl pattern, density, clumping, length, and strand variation.
When building a MetaHuman character, realistic curls can make a major difference to the character's identity and perceived realism. Blender provides a flexible environment for developing the underlying hair system before bringing the final groom into Unreal Engine.
Understanding Curl Patterns
Not all curls behave the same way.
A hairstyle may contain tight curls, loose curls, waves, coils, or combinations of different patterns.
The important characteristics include:
Curl radius
Curl frequency
Strand thickness
Density
Clumping
Direction
Length
A useful 3D workflow therefore needs more than a single "curl" setting.
Creating Curly Hair in Blender
Blender Hair Curves are particularly useful for procedural curly hairstyles.
Artists can create guide curves and manipulate them with grooming tools before applying procedural controls.
Geometry Nodes can then be used to introduce consistent variation.
For example, a node setup could control curl size according to a random value while keeping the overall hairstyle within an intentional range.
Building the Hairstyle in Layers
Instead of generating millions of detailed curls immediately, begin with the primary hairstyle.

Use realistic roughness and strand shading rather than relying entirely on strong specular highlights.
The lighting should reveal the three-dimensional structure of the curls.
For close-up shots, subtle strand-level detail can help prevent the hairstyle from appearing as a single mass.
Performance Considerations
High-density curls can become expensive.
For real-time MetaHuman projects, use appropriate LODs and test the hairstyle at different camera distances.
The highest-detail version should be reserved for situations where the viewer can actually see the additional information.

Realistic metahuman curls require a combination of procedural control and artistic grooming. Blender's Hair Curves and Geometry Nodes make it possible to create reusable curl systems, while Unreal Engine provides the final environment for testing movement, shading, physics, and performance.
