I've been looking for a really comprehensive guide to seasonal shrub care for a while now, and I've put together this month-by-month breakdown based on what I've learned from professional landscape resources and my own experience. What makes seasonal shrub care so effective is that it breaks down an overwhelming topic — keeping multiple shrubs healthy throughout an entire year — into small, timely, manageable actions. When you know specifically what to do in February versus April versus September, the maintenance never piles up and your garden always looks intentional and well-tended.

The key insight behind this approach is that shrubs have a predictable biological calendar driven by day length, temperature, and soil conditions. When you align your care actions with this calendar, each task becomes maximally effective because you're working with the plant's natural processes rather than against them. A fertilizer application in March, when roots are actively taking up nutrients, is worth far more than the same application in October when the plant is preparing for dormancy. This timing principle multiplies the value of every hour you invest in your shrub garden.

January–February: Plan and Prepare
Review last year's garden notes; plan any changes or additions for spring
Order bare-root shrubs and roses for early spring planting
In late February (warmer climates), begin pruning summer-flowering shrubs while fully dormant
Inspect and repair garden structures, trellises, and supports
Sharpen and oil pruning tools; clean and organize garden supplies

March–April: Spring Activation
Apply slow-release balanced fertilizer to all shrubs as new growth emerges
Top-dress planting beds with 1–2 inches of compost
Complete spring cleanup — remove winter debris, dead stems, and old mulch
Apply fresh mulch to 2–3 inch depth after soil has warmed
Plant new shrubs before the heat of summer arrives
Inspect for overwintered pests and treat early if found

May–June: Peak Growth Management
Prune spring-blooming shrubs immediately after flowers fade
Increase watering frequency as temperatures rise
Apply second round of fertilizer to heavy feeders if needed
Begin weekly pest scouting — inspect new growth for aphids, mites, and scale
Edge planting beds for clean, defined lines
Stake any tall or floppy perennials before they lean

July–August: Heat Stress Management
Water deeply 2–3 times per week; adjust for rainfall
Check mulch depth and replenish where thinned
Monitor for spider mites — they peak in hot, dry conditions
Deadhead spent blooms on reblooming shrubs and perennials
Avoid heavy pruning and fertilization during peak heat
Water container plants daily; they dry out rapidly in summer heat

September–October: Transitional Care
Reduce watering gradually as temperatures cool
Plant new shrubs — fall is the best time for establishment
Plant spring-blooming bulbs throughout garden beds
Stop fertilizing by early September
Begin leaf removal to prevent smothering of beds and lawn
Evaluate summer pest and disease issues; plan preventive treatments for next year

November–December: Winterization
Apply winter mulch (3–4 inches) after first hard frost
Protect tender shrubs with burlap or frost cloth
Apply anti-desiccant spray to broadleaf evergreens
Deep water all evergreens before ground freezes
Drain and store irrigation equipment properly
Cut back perennial foliage (except ornamental grasses and seed heads) after frost

Year-Round Habits That Make All the Difference
Beyond the monthly calendar, certain practices maintain a consistent positive impact on shrub health year-round:

Weekly walks through your garden to observe plants at close range
Keeping pruning tools sharp and clean
Using organic mulch and refreshing it twice yearly
Documenting what you observe, do, and learn each season
