Persistent Cough: Causes, Warning Signs & When Should You See a Pulmonologist?

Coughing is a natural reflex that helps protect the airways by clearing mucus, dust and other irritants. An occasional cough is usually not a reason for concern. However, when a cough continues for several weeks, keeps coming back, disturbs sleep or is accompanied by other symptoms, it should not simply be ignored.

In adults, a cough lasting eight weeks or longer is generally considered a chronic or persistent cough. It can have many possible causes, ranging from allergies and asthma to acid reflux, smoking-related conditions, infections and other lung problems.

If you have a persistent cough and are looking for a Pulmonologist Specialist in Delhi, a proper medical evaluation can help identify the underlying cause rather than treating the cough symptom alone.

What Is a Persistent or Chronic Cough?

A persistent cough is one that does not settle as expected or continues for a prolonged period. While many short-term coughs are related to common respiratory infections, a cough lasting eight weeks or more in an adult deserves medical assessment.

The character of the cough can vary. It may be:
  • Dry or irritating
  • Associated with mucus or phlegm
  • Worse at night
  • Triggered by cold air, dust or fragrances
  • Associated with wheezing
  • Accompanied by throat irritation or frequent throat clearing
The important point is that persistent cough is a symptom, not a diagnosis. Finding the reason behind it is essential for appropriate treatment.

Common Causes of Persistent Cough

There are several possible causes of a long-lasting cough. Sometimes more than one condition may contribute to the symptoms.

1. Asthma

Asthma can cause coughing, wheezing and breathing difficulty. In some people, cough may be the main or only noticeable symptom. Symptoms can become worse after exposure to cold air, allergens, smoke or certain irritants.

If your cough repeatedly occurs at night, after exercise or around specific triggers, an evaluation by a Lung Specialist may be helpful.

2. Postnasal Drip and Allergies

Mucus from the nose or sinuses can drain down the back of the throat and trigger coughing. Allergies, sinus problems and upper-airway irritation can therefore contribute to persistent cough.

You may also notice a blocked or runny nose, throat clearing or a sensation of mucus at the back of the throat.

3. Acid Reflux or GERD

Acid reflux occurs when stomach contents move back towards the esophagus. This irritation can sometimes contribute to chronic coughing.

Some people with reflux-related cough may also experience heartburn, a sour taste or throat irritation, although these symptoms are not always present.

4. Smoking and Other Irritants

Tobacco smoke can irritate the respiratory system and is an important risk factor for chronic cough. Exposure to secondhand smoke, dust, chemicals, fumes and other airborne irritants may also trigger coughing.

Reducing exposure to these irritants is an important part of protecting respiratory health.

5. Respiratory Infections

A cough may continue for some time after an infection such as a cold, flu or pneumonia has improved. Certain infections can produce a cough that lasts for weeks.

Tuberculosis (TB) and other respiratory infections can also cause prolonged cough, particularly when other symptoms are present. A persistent cough should therefore be evaluated rather than automatically assumed to be a routine infection.

6. COPD and Other Lung Conditions

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), chronic bronchitis, bronchiectasis and other lung conditions can be associated with long-lasting cough. Some people may also experience breathlessness, wheezing or increased mucus production.

This is one reason why people with recurring or unexplained respiratory symptoms may benefit from consultation with a Chest Specialist in Delhi or pulmonologist.

When Should You See a Pulmonologist for a Persistent Cough?

You should consider medical evaluation if your cough continues for several weeks, repeatedly returns or interferes with your daily life.

A cough lasting more than eight weeks in an adult should be discussed with a healthcare professional.

You should seek prompt medical attention if your cough is accompanied by symptoms such as:
  • Shortness of breath
  • Coughing up blood
  • Persistent or high fever
  • Wheezing
  • Chest discomfort or pain
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Significant night sweating
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Persistent or worsening symptoms
The presence of these symptoms does not automatically mean that you have a serious disease, but they deserve appropriate medical assessment.
