What happens if I skip seat selection on WestJet?
WestJet allows you to select your seat in advance when you book a flight, usually at the time of booking or afterwards using the Manage Trips feature on their website or app. WestJet still gives you a seat if you choose not to select your seat, but the process is a little different based on your price type and time of day.You can easily Choose WestJet seat preferences online for more comfort and convenience during your journey.
What Takes Place If You Don't Choose a Seat
Automatic Seat Assignment
In case you do not reserve a seat the WestJet company will automatically allocate one to you when you check in, which normally opens 24 hours before departure. It is ensured that by the time the flight boarding comes, everyone has gotten a seat, and you will not be left without one.
The majority of fares are free.
If you do not select a seat, WestJet assigns one at no additional cost for the majority of its pricing levels, including Econo and EconoFlex. This allows you to have a reserved seat on the aircraft without paying a seat selection fee.
Exceptions for Basic and UltraBasic
The passengers who have been booked in the lowest fare class like Basic or UltraBasic may be assigned a seat further back in the aircraft and they may need to purchase a fee to change their seat at a later time like that which is closer to the front of the aircraft.
Comfort and Seat Location
More Randomness, Less Choice
You may find yourself in a less ideal spot, like a middle seat or farther back in the economy cabin, because your seat is assigned depending on what's remaining after other passengers have chosen or paid for seats. Compared to making a reservation, you have less control over where you seat.
Comfort and Recline Considerations
In certain planes, WestJet has begun implementing new seating arrangements. Standard economy seats now have a fixed, non-reclining design, and additional comfort or reclining amenities are only available in premium or Extended Comfort seats. If you skip selection, it's another aspect that could affect how comfy your seat is, but it doesn't alter the assignment process.
Journeying Alongside Others
There's no assurance you'll sit together.
Automatic assignments may not put you together if you have a reservation with friends or family but do not choose your seats in advance. When feasible, airlines try to seat passengers close to one another, but this isn't always the case if you don't pick a seat.
Rules for Family Seating
There is an effort by WestJet to seat young children (under 14) near their parents or guardians though this is mainly done because of safety and legal reasons. But to have a higher possibility of staying with your group, you may have to come early and be assigned automatically.

Choose at Check-In
You can usually reserve a seat after the fact either during online check-in (when it becomes available) or sometimes at the Airport should you want a different seat than the one that was assigned automatically, despite not selecting the seat when placing your reservation. It is worth remembering that additional fees may also be according to the kind of seat and fare.
